Airman convicted for counterfeting base Web site

by Master Sgt. Stuart Camp, 1st SOW Public Affairs

HURLBURT FIELD - Airman Basic Jose Cossio, formerly assigned to the 1st Special Operations Mission Support Squadron, pleaded guilty and was convicted for counterfeiting the Hurlburt Field Web site and soliciting network IDs and passwords from six people.

Appearing before a military judge Nov. 15, the 25-year-old Airman pleaded guilty to two specifications of Article 134 and appealed for a chance to move on in his life.

"I am looking for closure, and I think I've found it today," Airman Cossio said during an unsworn statement during the courtroom proceedings. "I am looking forward to getting on with my life."

The judge, Lt. Col. Jennifer Whittier, sentenced the airman basic to forfeiture of $1,000 a month for five months and 150 days confinement. A pre-trial agreement limited the confinement to time served.

"This is the outcome the government was looking for," said Capt. Jason Lammli, trial council for the 1st Special Operations Wing. "Airman Cossio can move on, and the government can now move on."

This case was dismissed in February 2006, but the decision was overturned by the Air Force Court of Criminal Appeals earlier this year.

This was Airman Cossio's second court martial. He was found guilty in 2004 of unrelated charges and served eight months in jail in addition to a bad-conduct discharge. The Airman was on appellate leave following the first court martial when he committed the crimes prosecuted in the second trial.
