Horse euthanized by Sheriff's Deputy
An Okaloosa County sheriff ’s deputy had to put down a horse Saturday morning after it suffered severe injuries.
The horse was being transported in a horse trailer at about 10:45 a.m. Saturday when the driver noticed a “ruckus” coming from the trailer, according to a Sheriff ’s Office report. The driver stopped the vehicle at the eastbound Interstate 10 exit in Holt.
When the driver opened the trailer, he found the horse with its intestines hanging out of its body and made calls to get a veterinarian on site, but no vet was available, the report said.
An investigator for the Panhandle Animal Welfare Society was also called to the scene and determined the horse needed to be euthanized, but he did not have the proper drugs to do so.
The sheriff ’s deputy received approval from his supervisor to euthanize the horse and shot it twice in the forehead, according to the report, which did not speculate on how the horse became injured.
