Smoke shuts down State Road 20

Westbound lanes of State Road 20 near Basin Bayou in Walton County were closed Thursday as firefighters battled a brush fire.

Walton County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Bill May said both lanes of the road would be closed through the night because of heavy smoke.

The blaze started at about 3:30 p.m. and was contained within a 10- to 20-acre area by 4 p.m. However, emergency vehicles needed traffic to be halted to get to the area.

No injuries were reported.

May said officials would reassess the situation today and decide whether to reopen SR 20.
