Seaside removes street signs
Street signs in Seaside along County Road 30A were removed last month because they blocked access for emergency vehicles.
The wooden signs were in the middle of Seaside streets leading off County Road 30A and hindered access for larger emergency vehicles, said Kay Money, fire marshal and life safety coordinator with the South Walton Fire District.
Last month, when a construction worker fell off a building, the signs caused a problem.
“Our guys had to physically get out of trucks and remove two signs,” she said. “Seconds can make a difference.”
Money said the street signs did not comply with county code and it is against the law to “hinder emergency vehicles.”
T.J. Brooks, community association manager for the Seaside Town Council Inc., said the entry signs, which had “Private road” and “Parking by permit,” were removed without complaint.
“We are always going to do what they (SWFD) say,” he said. “We don’t ever want to slow down emergency vehicles.”
Brooks said that signs with the names of the streets are still installed, but they are off to the side and do not interfere with traffic.
Money is also making sure other planned communities are in compliance, but she is not aware of any other neighborhoods that have the same problem.
