Transformer failure causes large outage

An electricity transformer failed late Tuesday morning, cutting power to more than 1,500 people.

Gulf Power Co. workers had restored electricity to most of the customers within two hours. By 2 p.m., power for all but about 20 customers had been restored, said Richard Adams of Gulf Power.

The remaining customers were expected to have power by 4 p.m.

“We don’t know exactly why the transformer failed,” Adams said. “It could have been a lightning strike or an animal. Sometimes a piece of equipment fails just because of age.”
