Runner dies after collapsing in race
An Alabama man who collapsed while running in the Seaside Half Marathon on March 4 has died.
Ellis Porch III, of Meadow Brook, Ala., died in a Birmingham hospital on March 6, two days after collapsing. He was 30.
An article in the March 8 edition of the Birmingham News described Porch as one of Birmingham’s fastest distance runners and said he had run in the Boston Marathon three times.
The article quoted Porch’s father as saying that the cause of death might have been cardiac arrhythmia.
According to the Seaside Half Marathon’s Web site, Porch collapsed on the course at about mile 12. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family,” a message on the Web site says.
