Police investigate break-in at Walker Elementary
A Walker Elementary School teacher discovered substantial vandalism upon entering the building Wednesday morning.
First-grade teacher Rhonda Abernathy intended to take advantage of the quiet post-New Year’s holiday to prepare lesson plans, Principal Jeanine Kirkland said.
Abernathy immediately notified school officials who summoned Crestview Police. It was not immediately clear when the break-in occurred, but according to investigator Lt. Jamie Grant, the crime occurred over the recent winter holiday vacation.
“There was a lot of damage,” Grant said. “It’s pretty much widespread. They weren’t partial to any area.”
Before a thorough assessment of damages and an investigation could be made, a police dog first was sent through the halls of the school to assure the perpetrators were not on the premises.
Investigators already had secured as evidence two fire extinguishers that apparently had been discharged in the course of the vandalism spree.
In her brief foray into the building to call police after being notified by Abernathy of the break-in, Kirkland said she had noticed “some damage.”
Until the investigation is complete, the total extent of damages is not known.
