Former police officer dies of cancer

SHALIMAR — A retired police sergeant died Wednesday after a battle with cancer.

Shalimar resident Bruce Bankston, a 27-year veteran of the Fort Walton Beach Police Department, had retired earlier this year after his cancer was diagnosed.

He leaves behind a wife, three sons and a daughter.

“Bruce will be missed by many, but has left great memories, too,” said Police Chief Ted Litschauer. Bankston was three years short of full retirement benefits.

Earlier this year several businesses raised more than $12,000 for the family. An April 14 estate sale raised some money, but forced the family to part with some cherished possessions.

Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
