Bill Nye to Speak at the University of Florida

GAINESVILLE — Television personality Bill Nye “The Science Guy” will speak on Tuesday, Nov. 6, at the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Florida. The show begins at 8 p.m. and doors open at 7:15 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

Nye is currently the host of two television series: “The 100 Greatest Discoveries” on the Science Channel and “The Eyes of Nye” on PBS. Nye is most famously known for hosting the popular educational program, “Bill Nye the Science Guy.” The show ran from 1993-1997 and won 28 Emmy Awards. Nye also authored five books and won seven Emmy Awards for writing, performing and producing.

Nye has two patents on educational products and has worked extensively to set up and promote the EarthDial Project, a set of sundials around the world linked together on the World Wide Web. Nye is a graduate of Cornell University where he holds a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering, and he holds two Honorary Doctorate degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Goucher College.

ACCENT Speakers Bureau, the largest student-run speakers bureau in the nation, has been bringing prominent speakers to the University of Florida since 1967. ACCENT strives to bring controversial and influential speakers to the university, with the intent of further educating the student body. ACCENT speeches are not paid with tax or state dollars. ACCENT’s funding comes from activity fees, which students pay specifically to fund out-of-the-classroom experiences. Past ACCENT speakers include presidents, prime ministers, and entertainment, media, business and sports legends.
