Pet food recall expanded

An industrial chemical that led to the nationwide recall of more than 100 brands of cat and dog food has turned up in a second pet food ingredient imported from China.

The discovery expands the monthlong cascade of recalls to include more brands and varieties of pet foods and treats tainted by the chemical.

“This has exposed that the safety standards for pet foods are not in place in any significant way and the kind of drumbeat, day after day, of recalls has shaken consumers’ confidence in the pet food industry’s adherence to food safety standards,” said Wayne Pacelle, president and chief executive officer of the Humane Society of the United States.

The new addition to the pet food recall list is "Natural Life" in the vegetarian variety cans of 13.02 oz, with the date of Nov/22/09 on the bottom of the can. Check for the UPC number of 12344-07114.

It is really disgusting that we pay our hard earned dollars trying to buy the best for our pets to find out the food could actually kill or make my beloved pets sick. There is really no excuse for this. Pets food should have the same quality standards as human food. It is not ok to sell tainted pet food. It is not ok to dupe the public with all the "natural ingredients" when most common pet foods you buy in the supermarkets and even pet stores contain the most disgusting ingredients. These "animal by-products" you read on the label are sometimes rotten body parts that are just stuck into the processor to make more pet food to sell to line the pet food companies pockets. Do not settle for this, there needs to be a HUGE public outcry to increase the quality standards and to be honest on the food labels as to EXACTLY what is in our pets food. We have a right to know this. Do not disguise the disgusting ingredients by just putting "animal byproducts" on the label. That covers a LOT of different things. I have 2 dogs, 3 cats and 2 turtles. They are going on a natural diet that I'm going to cook and freeze for them myself! IF you decide to do the same, make sure you look up all the nutrients required by your pets. Cats need a much higher protein base than dogs do. If you give them too little it will not be good for them. You can get all of this information online. Lets' BOYCOTT the pet food companies until they become honest and caring enough to care about the pet food they sell to us. Do not give them any more of your hard earned money until they do.
