Now surfers can check the waves and families can see water conditions on Okaloosa Island before they leave the house.
Okaloosa County installed a Web cam at The Boardwalk last week so Internet users can see beach traffic and a warning flag before they head out.
Funding for the camera came from the county's public safety department.
"Public safety wanted to be able to post the flags and have people instantly find out what the conditions are at the beach," said Kathy Newby, Okaloosa's public information officer.
The County hopes to install Web cams on other beaches, specifically in Destin, Newby said.
The response has been positive. Several agencies have contacted Okaloosa about linking the Web cam to their sites.
"That right there tells you that people are definitely interested in this project and might like to see more," Newby said. "I've gotten a lot of response."
To view the Okaloosa Island Beach Web Cam, visit www.okaloosafl.com and look under the "Special Features" heading on the left side of the screen. Viewers can also read about the flag system and other beach and public safety programs and issues on the Web site.
"The more it's seen and the more information the county can provide is always a good thing," Newby said.
