A new look for Destin Commons

By Patrick Donohue Florida Freedom Newspapers

DESTIN - More is changing at Destin Commons than just its skyline.

As Destin Commons begins site improvements for their planned expansion - an expansion that will include the construction of additional retail space and a 192-room hotel, the shopping center is also working on a makeover to its image.

Since its conception, the Destin Commons logo has featured the shopping center's signature clock tower, but with the planned demolition of the clocktower as part of Phase Two improvements, the Commons may have to find a new icon.

Mary Kathryn Wells, marketing director at Destin Commons, said the demolition of the clocktower will likely happen at the tail end of Phase Two improvements.

"The clock tower is still under discussion and more than likely it would be at the later stages of Phase Two construction that changes would be made relative to the clock tower," she said.
In the interim, the Commons marketing team has been hard at work planning for a life sans clock tower as the shopping center moves toward its future.

"The grand opening of the expansion in the fall of 2009 will reveal a new branding of Destin Commons," she said. "Many exciting initiatives will be unveiled to include new creative programs, retail promotions, community events, community outreach endeavors and numerous other undertakings."

Wells said the Commons has already begun using a logo that doesn't feature the clock tower.

Recently approved by the Okaloosa County Board of Commissioners, Phase Two of Destin Commons will see the shopping center expanding southwest toward the intersection of Danny Wuerffel Way and U.S. 98.

The expansion will include more than 160,000 additional feet of shops and restaurant space, a 192-room hotel and convention space and a new five-story parking garage added to the shopping center.

Destin Commons has yet to announce the names of new tenants and the hotelier coming to the Commons. The new expansion is set to open in Fall 2009.
