Stormy weather creates busy day for lifeguards

By Joyce Owen, Walton Sun

With a single red flag signifying possible rip currents flying at South Walton’s beaches on Tuesday, two separate water rescues, only minutes apart, occurred at local beaches.

Several days of rain and strong winds resulted in the multiple rescues. One person was rescued near Pompano Joe’s in Miramar Beach. Another water rescue with four people involved occurred around 4 p.m. about 200 yards west of the Grayton Beach access.

The second multiple rescue was handled by a lifeguard stationed at Ed Walline beach access, Beach Safety Director Gary Wise said.

By mid-week, the weather had changed again and Wise planned to post green flags Thursday.

“Things seem to have settled down quite a bit,” Wise said. The forecast was for 5 to 10 knot winds from the southwest, he said.
